Prof. Ronnie Friedman, Vice-President for External Relations and University Advancement is a Professor of Immunology and holds the Ron Barbaro Chair in Veterinary Medicine. He is former Dean of the University’s Robert H. Smith Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environment, former Head of the Department of Animal Sciences, and former Vice-Dean for Teaching.
Born in South Africa, his family made Aliya in 1960 and he grew up on a moshav near Jerusalem. Prof. Friedman earned his B.Sc. in Agriculture and his M.Sc. in Immunology from the Hebrew University, and his Ph.D. in Immunology from the Weizmann Institute of Science. He undertook postdoctoral research in Immunology at Harvard Medical School and has since spent time there as a research fellow and a visiting professor. He has also been a research fellow in avian immunology at the Institute of Animal Health in the United Kingdom.
Prof. Friedman’s research interests include nutritional approaches to improving immune responses and resistance to disease in poultry; development and function of the entire immune system in omnivorous birds; and mechanisms of peripheral tolerance to protein antigens.
He has published some 100 papers, reviews and chapters in peer reviewed journals and scientific volumes, and delivered over 200 conference and seminar papers and guest lectures in Israel and abroad.
